The Cat's Table, by Michael Ondaatje
Summer reading is a passion of mine, and one I guard selfishly...just some time to sit and read at my leisure, to really appreciate the art of fiction and a particular author's gift.
I have two terrific libraries at my disposal--one is public, (literally across the street), the other is a college library (2 blocks away.)
And I have friends and family who are crazy-busy readers; like me, life seems a little off kilter without a novel or two going, without a book of essays or a gardening volume at the bedside table. So there are always books being recommended or passed along or sneaked from someone's bookcase, and then returned, before the owner ever notices!
These are, in no particular order, 5 of the best books I've read in the past few months. There are many others waiting, always a big stack, but these novels are the one's that had to be mentioned and passed on. Enjoy!
The Marriage Plot, by Jeffrey Eugenides
We The Animals, by Justin Torres
The Year we Left Home, by Jean Thompson
The Buddha In The Attic, by Jule Otsuka
(Well. Ok. If I had to pick a "best", it would have to be The Cat's Table....)
