Cool Sunday

The weather has changed here, after many, many muggy days and blazing heat.  Sleepless nights or fitful nights, and dragging through the outdoors as if through a swamp!
Finally a bit of low humidity and seasonable temps.  Breathing is easier and the light is crisp.  The cats run up and down the yard, with their tails all fluffed up, and then collapse, satisfied.

As Van says, "I'm kicking off from center field!"*

In the market, there are bags of freshly picked Gala, Fugi and Honey Crisp apples from local orchards, and the piles of local peaches that were overflowing baskets are now replaced by several types of pears.  Their skins are so different than the skins of summer fruits--a little thicker and denser, the colors of Autumn.  Finally there are pumpkins too, but if I put them out on the front steps too early, they will end up in the street, smashed....I admit, I was once a pumpkin-smasher too....

But the summer fruits are still out, and thankfully will be for some weeks to come.
Here's an really super cool drink that uses some of the best of summer's bounty.  Feel free to mix and match!

Watermelon Cooler: Lemon Mint or Lime Basil

1 Cup Seedless Watermelon chunks
1/2 Banana or handful of Raspberries/Blackberries/ Blueberries
1/2 Cup Coconut Water or unsweetened Almond/Coconut milk
Juice of 1/2 a small Lemon or Lime
A few Ice Cubes
3  Mint or Basil Leaves

Combine all ingredients in a blender, adding more Coconut Water if necessary.
To turn it from a smoothie into a slushie, use frozen fruit.

Enjoy!
