Shrine to Tsukuyomi, Shinto God of the Moon, Kyoto

Two Poems by Jakuren  (1139?-1202)

1.

tsukuyomi no
hikari o machite
kaerimase
yamaji wa kure no
iga no utsureba

wait until the moon-god shines
before you leave for home:
chestnut burrs have fallen
on the mountain path

2.

yamakage no
kusano iori wa
ito samushi
shiba o takitsutsu
yo o akashiten

awake and heaping
brushwood on the ashes
winter night
